Zelensky signs law granting UAH 50,000 monthly payments to released POWs during treatment

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law providing payments to servicemembers released from captivity who suffer from illnesses requiring long-term inpatient treatment.

According to Ukrinform, this is evidenced by the record of the law amending certain legislative acts of Ukraine regarding payments to servicemembers released from captivity who have illnesses requiring long-term inpatient treatment, published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

In turn, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko thanked President Volodymyr Zelensky and members of parliament for passing the law on payments to servicemembers released from captivity.

“The President has signed the respective law — thank you for your support. I am grateful to the members of parliament for adopting this important decision for our military,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

“The support will be provided during the first three months of rehabilitation. Previously, such payments were granted only to those who sustained wounds, concussions, or injuries. However, many servicemembers returning from captivity also suffer from serious illnesses requiring long-term treatment. Now the state guarantees assistance to every man and woman who has endured captivity. This is an important step toward comprehensive support for our defenders,” Svyrydenko stressed.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Verkhovna Rada passed the law on October 9, with 244 members of parliament voting in favor.

It is stipulated that servicemembers who, immediately after release from captivity, undergo inpatient treatment in healthcare facilities for more than 30 calendar days due to illness or injury (wound, concussion, or mutilation) requiring long-term inpatient care, will receive an additional monthly payment of UAH 50,000.

The payment will be made throughout the entire period of continuous inpatient treatment following release from captivity.

At the same time, the law stipulates that payment of this additional compensation is suspended if a servicemember is formally notified of suspicion of committing crimes against the foundations of Ukraine’s national security and/or military criminal offenses.

If a guilty verdict for such an offense enters into legal force, the additional payment will not be made.
