In temporarily occupied Mariupol, Russian forces plan to demolish approximately 10,000 private homes, including residences on one of the city's oldest streets, Torhova.

According to Ukrinform, this information was reported by the City Council of Ukrainian Mariupol via Telegram.

"The largest number of demolitions is planned for the Livoberezhnyi and Tsentralnyi districts of the occupied city… Among them, most of the houses on one of Mariupol’s historic streets, Torhova, are set to be destroyed. In place of homes belonging to Mariupol residents, the occupiers intend to build mortgage housing for Russians," the statement reads.

The Russian-installed authorities claim the demolitions are necessary due to the extensive damage caused by fighting. However, instead of assisting residents in rebuilding their homes, the invaders have opted to erase what remains.

The city council recalled that during Russia’s blockade of Mariupol, more than 38,000 private homes were damaged, with 6,500 completely destroyed.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, Russian officials estimate that rebuilding the occupied city could take at least 18 years—provided they have the resources to do so.
