Explaining complex things in simple words: Situation in Avdiivka, global security agenda, U.S. assistance

The Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security pursues efforts to provide a brief explanation to foreign audiences on the current topics of particular interest as regards Ukraine.

SITUATION IN AVDIIVKA

  • The situation in Avdiivka is complicated, but controlled. Fierce battles are taking place within the city limits. Ukrainian troops use all available forces and means to deter the enemy.

  • There is a planned reinforcement of units, an additional resource of ammunition and other weapons is allocated.

  • Troops are manoeuvred in the most dangerous areas. Field commanders know their task and perform it in accordance with the plan of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

  • New positions have been prepared and work continues on the construction of fortifications, taking into account all possible scenarios. We value every piece of Ukrainian land, while our highest value and priority is the preservation of the lives of Ukrainian defenders.

  • The defence of Avdiivka has been going on since 2014; over the past seven months, the city has been repelling constant enemy assaults. Huge losses of Russian troops near Avdiivka deplete the potential of the aggressor.

GLOBAL SECURITY AGENDA

On February 16-18, the annual Munich Security Conference takes place.

  • The Munich Conference is an influential international platform for discussing global security issues. This year, about 50 country leaders and 100 ministers are expected to participate.

  • The event is attended by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will present the Ukrainian vision of the challenges and prospects of 2024. We expect that Ukraine and Germany will sign an agreement on security guarantees.

  • Ukraine is the focus of the Conference on a par with the Middle East. The transatlantic community is facing a serious challenge, it must pass the test for the ability to effectively invest in security.

  • Representatives of Russia and Iran were not invited to the conference, since their political regimes only generate global problems and are not determined to solve them.

U.S. ASSISTANCE

On February 15, the U.S. House of Representatives took pause without voting in favour of the bill on financing assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

  • U.S. aid is currently delayed. The House of Representatives will be able to return to the issue no earlier than February 28.

  • The White House criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson for refusing to put the question of aid to a vote before the break.

  • Every day of delaying costs Ukraine dearly. American support is what saves the lives of Ukrainians at the front and in the rear.

  • We expect that the House of Representatives will find the necessary number of votes for effective voting after the pause.

  • Ukraine is grateful for the efforts of all lobbyists of the assistance provision to Ukraine in the U.S. Congress.
