Ukraine plans to demine 80% of potentially contaminated territories within ten years - Svyrydenko
This issue was discussed during a meeting between Ukrainian government officials and foreign diplomats to discuss implementing the environmental security point in the Ukrainian Peace Formula, Ukrinform reports, citing the Ukrainian Economy Ministry.
"One of the environmental tasks in the Peace Formula of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is to demine 80% of potentially contaminated territories and return full-fledged life there in ten years. The Ukrainian government has set itself such an ambitious goal. To do so, Ukraine needs strong international support," Svyrydenko said.
According to her, Ukraine has about 3,000 sappers working at the limit of their strength and 26 mechanized mine clearance machines, which is not enough to achieve the set goal. Therefore, solving the problem of mine clearance and the damage done to the environment by Russian aggression will require the joint efforts of the whole world for many years.
The government official called on representatives of diplomatic institutions to join partners who are already helping Ukraine in mine clearance efforts.
"Our ultimate goal is to use all modern technologies to speed up demining, make it safer and more efficient. We want the world to have enough capacity to deal with mines and explosives. And we want a modern demining policy that could be used in other polluted regions," she said.
