Ukrainian strikes on Russian naval targets are likely part of a deliberate campaign aimed at setting favorable conditions for larger counteroffensive operations.

“Ukrainian naval strikes are likely part of a deliberate interdiction campaign aimed at setting favorable conditions for larger counteroffensive operations,” reads the report by the U.S. Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

It is noted that the nature and location of SIG ship during the attack suggest that Ukrainian forces intended to disable the ship without generating significant ecological consequences.

“Ukrainian forces have long targeted the Kerch Strait Bridge in order to degrade Russian military logistics in southern Ukraine, and the attack on the SIG is likely part of a wider effort to disable ships involved in supplying Russian military forces,” the report says.

As reported, the Russian oil/chemical tanker SIG, which came from Turkey, was damaged as a result of an attack by naval drones in the Kerch Strait.

SIG is a Russian-flagged commercial tanker. It is reported that it delivered aviation fuel from Crimea to Syria, for which it was included in the US sanctions lists.
