Prosecutor General's Office: Already more than 670 suspects in main case over Russian aggression
"We have 674 suspects in the main case over aggression. This is a so-called elitist crime, the suspects are people who hold very high positions. We have 312 cases of this category in courts and 20 sentences. The sentences were passed against the members of the State Duma of the Russian Federation," Yuriy Bielousov, Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed During Armed Conflict at the Prosecutor General's Office, told Interfax-Ukraine in an interview, Ukrinform reports.
According to him, prosecutors, together with colleagues from the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police, have identified hundreds of thousands of Russians who are in Ukraine. Bielousov spoke about relevant databases which contain profiles of all identified Russians – service members and intelligence agents. The head of the "War Department" said that not all of them committed war crimes.
According to his data, tens of thousands of Russians may be involved in war crimes in the opinion of law enforcement officers.
"Let's call them potential suspects. As for the officially suspected, there are two major directions: war crimes and the crime of aggression. In the first direction, we have 386 suspects. Of these people, indictments against 225 were sent to court, and of those sent to court, we have 54 convicted people. Out of 54 sentences, 15 are real, not in absentia. As a rule, these are low-ranking soldiers, privates or low-level officers," the representative of the Prosecutor General's Office said.
