Russians abduct 8,800 Ukrainians since beginning of invasion, over 10,000 missing

In Ukraine, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, almost 8,800 civilians have been victims of enforced disappearances, and 10,200 people are missing.

That's according to a response from the Main Investigation Department of the National Police to a request made by ZMINA, Ukrinform reports.

Thus, according to the National Police, from February 24, 2022, to June 6, 2023, National Police investigators opened 16,000 criminal proceedings on the facts of illegal deprivation of freedom and enforced disappearance of almost 8,800 civilians.

The National Police investigators also opened 7,300 criminal proceedings into the disappearance of 10,200 people.

"In the context of war, the National Police bodies are carrying out all the necessary investigative (search) and procedural actions to establish the whereabouts of missing and illegally deprived of freedom, which can be carried out in the context of armed conflict," the police emphasized.

As reported, in May, the Commissioner for Missing Persons Oleh Kotenko informed that the Unified Register of Persons Missing under Special Circumstances contains more than 23,000 names. At the same time, the Commissioner's secretariat reports a much lower number of missing persons - about 7,000: military and civilians, and those who have disappeared since 2014.

According to Kotenko, since the end of May 2022, 8,000 Ukrainians have been found thanks to the work of the secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons Missing in Special Circumstances.

On June 10, during a rally dedicated to the liberation of Ukrainian citizens from Russian captivity, Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said that about 22,000 Ukrainian civilians are currently in Russian captivity.
