Russian troops continue to launch heavy artillery and air strikes on the Mariupol-based Azovstal plant, although up to 100 civilians are still remaining there.

The relevant statement was made by Advisor to Mariupol Mayor Petro Andriushchenko on Telegram, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Mariupol. Azovstal. In addition to the military, at least 100 civilians are remaining in bomb shelters. But, this does not reduce the density of attacks by Russian occupiers. The plant has been under continuous heavy artillery and air strikes over the past day. Ground assault attempts are still unsuccessful,” Andriushchenko wrote.

He posted a video of numerous explosions within the Azovstal plant. The video also depicts the Ukrainian flag flying at the peak of one of production structures within the plant.

A reminder that the Russian armed aggression has caused one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in the city of Mariupol. On May 7, 2022, women, children and the elderly were evacuated from the Mariupol-based Azovstal plant. But, on May 9, 2022, Donetsk Regional Military Administration Head Pavlo Kyrylenko reported that about 100 civilians were remaining in bomb shelters within the Azovstal plant.

The Azov Regiment, National Guard of Ukraine, marines and motorized riflemen continue to fight against Russian invaders within the Azovstal plant. Ukrainian authorities are working on diplomatic options to rescue the Ukrainian military remaining in Mariupol.
