Duda: Poland to support granting Ukraine EU candidate status

Ukrainians deserve to obtain the status of the candidate for the EU membership in June.

President of Poland Andrzej Duda made a corresponding statement at the World Economic Forum in Davos, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

From a psychological point of view, the EU should show the Ukrainian society that it is open and supports Ukrainians, he noted.

As Duda stressed, today's struggle of Ukrainians to defend their country is also a struggle for the right to determine their destiny and be part of the West.

"Therefore, the West must open up to Ukrainians and say: yes, we accept you. This is a very important element. Therefore, we will, without a doubt, very actively support Ukraine's aspirations for obtaining a candidate status and for Ukraine to eventually become a member of the EU,” the President of the Republic of Poland emphasized.

Ukraine hopes to gain a candidate status at the summit of EU leaders scheduled for June 23-24.
