Meloni to nominate candidate for EU role in Russia-Ukraine peace talks

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will propose a candidate for the position of the EU special representative in negotiations aimed at resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine at the upcoming EU summit.

According to Ukrinform, Meloni made the announcement while speaking to journalists at a press conference following the G7 summit.

During her remarks on the sidelines of the gathering, Meloni elaborated on whom she believes should take on the role.

According to the Italian Prime Minister, the EU negotiator should come from a “medium-sized country” rather than one of the bloc’s largest member states.

Meloni also said that during the G7 Summit, the leaders managed to reach common ground with U.S. President Donald Trump on issues related to Ukraine.

At the same time, she stressed that such understanding “cannot always be taken for granted.”

Meloni said she would formally present her proposal for the candidate at the summit in Brussels.
