Russia's attack on Ukraine's territorial integrity justifies new, severe sanctions: European Parliament President

Russia's unilateral attack on Ukraine's territorial integrity is a gross violation of international law and justifies a package of severe sanctions by the European Union.

According to Ukrinform, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola spoke out via Twitter on Tuesday, February 22.

"The unilateral attack on the territorial integrity of #Ukraine and the gross violation of international law by Russia justifies new, severe, sanctions. We will not leave the Ukrainian people to their aggressors. The position of the European Parliament is clear: We are with Ukraine," said Roberta Metsola.

As reported earlier, on February 21, the President of Russia signed decrees recognizing the independence of the two self-proclaimed entities in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine. The agreements concluded between these quasi-republics and Russia provide for military assistance to the said entities. Russia has thus openly acknowledged its military presence in the temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
