Gerus: Ukraine getting ready for worst-case ‘gas scenario’

Ukraine plans to fill the gas storage facilities to capacity in order to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, namely the cessation of Russian gas transit through the Ukrainian territory.

"If you are ready for the worst-case scenario, it is most likely not to happen. Therefore, we are preparing to fill the gas storage facilities to capacity and spend a winter without transit owing to this resource," representative of the President in the Cabinet of Ministers Andriy Gerus said in an interview with the RBC-Ukraine news agency.

In addition, the European companies show interest in swap agreements, i.e. they pump gas into the Ukrainian gas storage facilities now, sell it conditionally, and buy it back in a year, the presidential representative noted.

“Private traders also pump gas into the underground gas storage facilities to sell it in winter,” Gerus said.

He reminded that Russian Gazprom stated it is ready to resume negotiations on gas transit after the elections when the new Ukrainian government is formed.
