Ministry of Digital Transformation and Nokia work to re-establish internet connection in frontline cities
The team of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, with the support of Nokia, is launching a pilot project to modernise internet networks in Ukraine.
The press service of the Ministry of Digital Transformation reported this, according to Ukrinform.
"In wartime, communications and the Internet are a technological advantage over the enemy. One of our priorities is to provide more than 1 million Ukrainians living in frontline settlements with high-speed internet that does not depend on electricity and is resistant to regular shelling. I am grateful to Nokia for being the first to respond and joining the project to restore telecoms networks. The company is ready to provide state-of-the-art equipment for fixed-line Internet access and mobile communications," said Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology, Minister of Digital Transformation.
The project will upgrade telecoms equipment and ensure the transition to non-volatile internet networks.
"They are more secure and resistant to shelling and blackouts. This will allow Ukrainians to stay in touch even in critical conditions, and providers not to endanger their employees," the Ministry of Digital Transformation stressed.
The ministry added that 20% of Ukraine's territory was under occupation and needs to be fully restored to the destroyed digital infrastructure, so the first stage of the project will include an assessment and analysis of the damage. The next step is to design modernised networks, build and upgrade equipment.
Six settlements in the Kherson, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions are being considered for the pilot project. Kherson is the first region where the project is planned to be rolled out.
"After the pilot launch in several localities, we plan to scale the initiative. To make Ukrainian communications more sustainable and energy-independent," the Ministry of Digital Transformation added.
As reported earlier, the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Palantir signed a memorandum of cooperation in the areas of defence and reconstruction of Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
