UK will send AS90 self-propelled guns to Ukraine

Apart from Challenger 2 tanks, the UK will soon send around 30 AS90 self-propelled guns to Ukraine.

“A squadron of 14 tanks will go into the country in the coming weeks… Around 30 AS90s, which are large, self-propelled guns, operated by five gunners, are expected to follow,” reads the press release published on the website of the Government of the United Kingdom.

It is underscored that sending Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine is the start of a gear change in the UK’s support.

The British Secretary of Defence will set out further details of the new assistance package to Ukraine in the House of Commons on Monday.

As noted, the UK will begin training the Armed Forces of Ukraine to use the tanks and guns in the coming days.

In addition, the UK intends to carry out a series of activities “to galvanise further international action.”

“UK defence and security officials believe a window has opened up where Russia is on the backfoot due to resupply issues and plummeting morale. The Prime Minister is therefore encouraging allies to deploy their planned support for 2023 as soon as possible to have maximum impact,” the press release says.
