DM Fedorov explains how deferral is calculated after contract expires
Different mechanisms for calculating deferments will apply to various types of military contracts, taking into account combat experience and years of service.
According to Ukrinform, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced this on Telegram.
“One of the principles of the new contract system is to fairly take into account the soldier’s past service,” Fedorov noted.
According to him, upon completion of their contract, servicemembers are guaranteed to receive a deferment. Its duration will depend not only on the type of contract but also on prior length of service and participation in combat operations.
Different types of contracts will have separate mechanisms for calculating deferments, which take into account combat experience and years of service. A six-month deferment is guaranteed for everyone. The rest depends on what kind of contract you signed and how long you served in the military.
“For example, there is a civilian who signed a 14-month infantry assault contract. During his service, he spent four months in combat, for which he received a 12-month deferment. Together with the guaranteed deferment, that’s a year and a half,” Fedorov gave as an example.
If, however, such a contract was signed by an active-duty servicemember (in this case, for 10 months) who has been in the military since 2021, an additional 6 months are added for each year of service starting in 2022, and one month for each year prior to 2022.
“So, two years and one month are added to the 1.5 years. As a result, upon completion of the contract, the servicemember will receive a deferment of 3 years and 7 months,” Fedorov concluded.
According to him, the goal is to make the military service system predictable and fair.
“Those who have defended the country longer should receive more time to recover after completing their service. This also applies to servicemembers who have been in the Defense Forces the longest and spent the most time in combat. For them, we are beginning a gradual discharge from service by the end of the year,” Fedorov stated.
More details about the terms of the new contracts and the calculation of deferrals can be found on the Defense Forces’ contract system website and by calling the hotline at 1519.
As reported by Ukrinform, Fedorov spoke about the mechanism for returning from the Armed Forces through “Army+.”
