Council of Baltic Sea States calls for increasing pressure on Russia
The Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) urged stronger pressure on Russia to weaken its ability to continue the war against Ukraine.
This was stated in a joint declaration by foreign ministers following the CBSS meeting on Friday, May 29, in the Polish city of Sopot, Ukrinform reports, citing Poland's Foreign Ministry.
"There is a need for increased pressure on Russia to weaken its capacity to continue its illegal war of aggression, including through an effective sanctions process, stricter enforcement of existing measures and the introduction of potential new instruments, such as a full maritime services ban on Russian energy exports, based on full coordination and consideration of discussions within the G7 and the Price Cap Coalition," the declaration states.
It notes that Russia, supported by Belarus, and those responsible must be held accountable for crimes and provide full compensation for the damage caused to Ukraine.
The Council reaffirmed its firm and unwavering support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, as well as for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace based on international law, including the UN Charter.
"The Council stands by Ukraine as it exercises its inherent right to self-defence against Russia's illegal war of aggression and emphasized the importance of ensuring increased political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support," the declaration says.
In addition, the Council expressed its commitment to supporting the search for, return, and reintegration of Ukrainian children illegally deported and forcibly displaced by Russia, ensuring accountability for these crimes, and legally assessing the ideological indoctrination of children in occupied territories.
"The Council shared the understanding that Ukraine is increasingly a contributor to the security of its partners, recognizing for example its unmatched innovation and experience in modern technologies on the battlefield," the document states.
It is also emphasized that no initiatives or decisions regarding Ukraine should be made without Ukraine.
The CBSS meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, and Sweden, as well as the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
As Ukrinform previously reported, Canada and the Nordic countries agreed to strengthen cooperation and support.
