Fico and Orban want to undermine EU from within – Slovak commentator

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico considers Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin an important ally and is contributing to the weakening of the European Union together with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

This was stated in a comment to Ukrinform by Beata Balogová, chief commentator of the Slovak daily SME.

“Robert Fico joined Viktor Orbán long ago in an effort to disintegrate the European Union, attacking it from within as an agent of Vladimir Putin,” Balogová said.

On the one hand, she added, Fico says that the EU needs reforms and must be stronger; on the other, he massively contributes to the forces that weaken it.

“He has explicitly stated that he will seek alliances in all directions and that, for him, Putin is as important a partner as his Western allies,” the commentator emphasized.

Balogová recalled that after visits to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the Slovak Prime Minister returned with the idea that a one-party system would be more effective in governing the country.

“In Slovakia, however, the majority of the population wants to remain in the EU and opposes seeking alliances in the East among Putin’s vassals,” Balogová stressed.
