Von der Leyen sees EU membership as key security guarantee for Ukraine

Following a video conference of European leaders on Tuesday focused on support for Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of Ukraine's accession to the EU as a guarantee of peace.

She said this in a post on X, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Good discussion today with European leaders on our support to Ukraine, its security, and the reconstruction of the country," von der Leyen wrote.

She stressed that EU membership is a critical element of security guarantees for Ukraine.

"Ultimately, the prosperity of a free Ukrainian state lies in the accession to the EU. It's also a key security guarantee in its own right," she said.

According to von der Leyen, EU enlargement benefits not only the countries that join, but also Europe itself, as the successive waves of enlargement show.
