Zelensky: U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine should be article-five-like
President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine should be approved by Congress and modeled on NATO’s Article Five.
The President said this while responding to questions from journalists, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“The Americans want Ukraine to have realistic security guarantees this time, passed by Congress, with access to weapons, sanctions that can be applied if necessary, air defense systems, and guarantees that are article-five-like,” Zelensky said.
He noted that these are the broad contours of the guarantees, but the specific details are still being worked out.
Earlier, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine expects legally codified security guarantees from the United States, which should be significantly stronger than current measures.
