EU on Russia's strikes against Ukraine's energy system: Putin continues his terror
Russia continues to terrorize the Ukrainian population by attacking critical infrastructure and endangering nuclear safety, according to European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper.
She said this at a briefing in Brussels on Monday, commenting on the latest Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure that caused disruptions across the country, Ukrinform reports.
"Putin continues to terrorize the Ukrainians. What we have seen from these attacks is that he is targeting critical energy infrastructure, including substations supplying to nuclear power plants. This massive attack disrupted electricity, water, and heating services, and endangered also the nuclear safety," Hipper said.
She recalled that in addition to its ongoing support for Ukraine, the EU is "continuously working on sanctions" and seeking to engage partner countries to further assist Ukraine's energy sector.
At the same time, the spokesperson avoided a direct answer to whether the EU's current sanctions work includes preparations for the next, 20th, package of restrictions against Russia.
"The work on sanctions is confidential, as well as the timing, but of course, we are continuously working on that," Hipper said.
On November 8, Russian forces launched more than 450 strike drones and 45 missiles against Ukraine, targeting the Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Poltava regions. The Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions were also hit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said thousands of people were involved in stabilizing and restoring the energy system after the damage inflicted.
