Ukraine's FM, Vatican Secretary discuss release of POWs, children abducted by Russia

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha met in New York on Thursday with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States.

According to Ukrinform, Sybiha shared details of the meeting on the social media platform X.

"We highly appreciate the Holy Father's constant spiritual support for Ukraine and the Vatican's humanitarian assistance, including care for Ukrainian children," Sybiha wrote.

He expressed Ukraine's gratitude for Cardinal Matteo Zuppi's mission and the Holy See's engagement in the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war and deported children.

"We continue to hope for His Holiness's apostolic visit to Ukraine, which would provide the critically needed spiritual support to millions of believers during the trying time of the full-scale war," Sybiha said.

He added that Ukraine and the Holy See "will continue working to alleviate human suffering and advance the cause of peace."

He also reiterated an invitation for Archbishop Gallagher to visit Ukraine at a convenient time.
