Von der Leyen: European leaders, Trump working toward just peace
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has released a video of her meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, stressing that European leaders together with the U.S. president are working to end the bloodshed in Ukraine.
She announced this in a post on the social media platform X, Ukrinform reports.
"Today, I'm in Washington D.C. with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. Together, we will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump," von der Leyen wrote.
"We are working to end the bloodshed in Ukraine. And achieve a just and lasting peace," she said.
As reported, President Zelensky arrived in Washington on Monday. Today, he is scheduled to meet President Trump in the Oval Office, followed by talks at the White House with European leaders on ways to end the war in Ukraine.
On Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron outlined the main points discussed in a videoconference of the Coalition of the Willing with European leaders and Zelensky ahead of the Washington summit. He said the conversation, lasting just over two hours, focused on priorities for the meeting with Trump.
According to Macron, the leaders intend to remind Trump of what unites the U.S., Ukraine, and the EU — their shared commitment to peace, and to ensuring that Russia respects international law and Ukraine's territorial sovereignty.
