MEPs propose to donate to Ukraine military equipment seized in Libya - media

European Parliament members took the initiative to hand over to Ukraine weapons and military equipment seized in Libya.

This is reported by Politico, Ukrinform saw.

It is noted that the Dutch liberal lawmaker Bart Groothuis called on the members of the European Parliament to sign the corresponding letter by the end of the working day on October 26.

“We call upon you to transfer the seized vehicles of the IRINI operation, and similar military equipment or ammunition from this or other EU operations, to Ukraine,” the letter said.

This is about t 146 vehicles confiscated last year in two operations by the EU’s IRINI naval mission as part of efforts to enforce a UN arms embargo on Libya.

At the same time, Groothuis referred to U.S. plans to send seized Iranian munitions to Ukraine and sees an opportunity for Europe to do the same.

"Because the U.S. is doing it, so why can’t we? It’s all about political will," he said.

According to him, Libya is actively lobbying at the UN for the return of this military equipment, which would be "the worst possible solution."

Today, the letter was signed by the head of the parliamentary subcommittee on defense Natalie Loiseau (France), and MEP Guy Verhofstadt (Belgium).

On Friday, October 27, the letter is expected to be sent to member states of the Political and Security Committee of the EU Council and the Committee of the European Peace Facility, which is responsible for extrabudgetary funding for Ukraine. A copy of the appeal will also be forwarded to the commander of the IRINI naval mission.

As reported by Ukrinform, EU leaders at the October 26-27 summit in Brussels will discuss, among other things, the acceleration of military support to Ukraine and the use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine recovery.
