Ukraine, Georgia need 'some time' to join NATO - Sherman

Ukraine and Georgia need "some time" to meet NATO's high standards and be ready to join the military alliance, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman has said.

She said this after a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council in Brussels on Wednesday, January 12, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"We [at NATO] are open to everyone, and certainly Ukraine is one of those countries that very much wants to become a member, and so they are going through the process. It does take some time and there is a lot of work that has to get done to make sure that the high standards of NATO are met," Sherman said.

Sherman, who led the U.S. delegation in talks with Russian officials in Geneva and Brussels, also noted that the same was true for Georgia.
