Korynevych: Construction of North Crimean Canal dam needs to be completed

The construction of a dam at the 107th kilometer of the North Crimean Canal, Kherson region, must be completed to shut out water supply to the temporarily occupied Crimea.

This was discussed during the meeting of Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Anton Korynevych with Head of the North Crimean Canal Department in Tavriysk town Serhiy Shevchenko.

"We discussed the issues important for the functioning of the Canal, in particular, the need to complete the construction of a dam at the 107th kilometer of the Canal in order to shut out water supply to the temporarily occupied Crimea and to significantly improve land reclamation in southern areas of Kherson region," Korynevych said.

He stressed that the position of the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the North Crimean Canal Department remains unequivocal: no water will be supplied to Crimea until the de-occupation.

Before 2014, Ukraine provided for 85% of Crimea's fresh water needs through the North Crimean Canal, which connects the Dnieper with the peninsula. After Russia had occupied Crimea, water supply to Crimea was stopped.

Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly stated that water supply to Crimea will be restored only after the de-occupation of the peninsula.
