U.S. will never accept Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea – embassy

The United States welcomed the UN General Assembly's adoption of a resolution on human rights in the temporarily occupied Crimea and called on the Russian Federation to fulfill its obligations as an occupying power in Crimea and immediately end its violations there.

This was said in a statement by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, published on its official Facebook page on December 16.

“We welcome the UNGA resolution urging Russia to uphold its obligations as an occupying power in Crimea and immediately end its violations and abuses there,” the statement reads.

At the same time, the United States called on Russia to free unlawfully detained Ukrainians and give unfettered access to human rights monitors.

“We will never accept Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea,” the embassy stressed.

On Wednesday, December 16, the UN General Assembly, by a majority vote, adopted the updated resolution "Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine." This is the fifth consecutive resolution of the General Assembly on human rights violations in the occupied Crimea and the ninth one in the context of an international response to Russia's attempt to annex the Ukrainian peninsula.
