Zelensky to convene NSDC meeting

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) will consider problems in the country's coal industry, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

He said this at a briefing in Lviv region on May 29, according to the official website of the head of state.

"There was a great sorrow - we lost two people. We have also heard today about problems related to the working conditions of miners, safety conditions. We understand that this question is very complicated. Therefore, we will convene a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council," Zelensky said after visiting the Lisova mine in Sokal district, where two miners were killed in an accident.

The meeting is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 31.

The president also stressed that the families of miners who died in the accident would receive support from the state.

"It has already been decided to allocate 100,000 hryvnias [to each family]," he said.

In addition, Zelensky stressed that he would personally help the families of the deceased to solve the housing issue.

On May 29, a rock slide trapped miners at the Lisova mine owned by the Lvivvuhillia state enterprise. Two miners, born in 1971 and 1997, died in the accident.

Police opened criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 272 (violation of safety rules related to high-risk operations) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Zelensky met with coalminers who told him about delays in the payment of wages.
