Saakashvili returns to Ukraine

Former Georgian President and former Odesa Regional Governor Mikheil Saakashvili has returned to Ukraine.

The plane with Saakashvili on board landed at Kyiv's Boryspil Airport at about 17:30 on Wednesday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

About two hundred supporters were waiting for Saakashvili's arrival. They met Saakashvili with applause, chanting "Misha, Misha."

More than two dozen journalists also met Saakashvili.

Those who met Saakashvili included Hero of Ukraine Stepan Khmara, as well as one of Saakashvili's comrades, David Sakvarelidze.

On May 28, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree to return Ukrainian citizenship to Saakashvili by amending a decree of former President Petro Poroshenko.

Saakashvili received a Ukrainian passport in 2015. He was appointed chairman of Odesa Regional State Administration. He resigned from the post in the autumn of 2016, and on July 26, 2017, President Poroshenko stripped Saakashvili of Ukrainian citizenship.
