Rada calls on world leaders to protect Mejlis

The Ukrainian lawmakers have passed the resolution to support the appeal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the UN, the European Parliament, the PACE and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the world leaders and the whole international community calling them to condemn the violations of human rights and freedoms of the Crimean Tatar people in the occupied Crimea.

223 MPs voted for the resolution on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

It is noted in the appeal that the Ukrainian Parliament demands that Russia immediately stop the policy directed at the violation of human rights and freedoms of citizens in Crimea, including the rights of the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people.

The Verkhovna Rada asks the international community to condemn the ban on Mejlis by the occupation authorities and calls on the world leaders and prominent statesmen to make appropriate efforts to protect the Crimean Tatars from discrimination and harassment on part of the Russian Federation.
