EU Commissioner Jorgensen announces new energy aid for Ukraine
The European Union is providing EUR 100 million in humanitarian assistance and generators for Ukraine and is already planning energy support for the next winter season.
European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen, stated this during his visit to Kyiv, Ukrinform reports.
"Four years after his illegal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, Putin continues to enact his strategy of terror by systematically targeting energy infrastructure, leaving millions of Ukrainians in the dark and cold. The European Union will not let Russia freeze our brave Ukrainian friends into submission," he said.
On the contrary, the EU is increasing its support to ensure the safety of Ukrainians, he emphasized.
"To provide immediate assistance, we are putting forward a new package of EUR 100 million for humanitarian aid and generators," Jorgensen stated.
At the same time, the EU is already beginning preparations for the next winter.
"As Ukraine keeps fighting, we must support energy security and reinforce the resilience of its energy system," he stressed. "We will work with Ukraine on a new plan worth EUR 920 MIL to repair, rebuild and restart their energy system."
The EU will also help strengthen the energy grid, restore damaged thermal power plants, improve physical protection, and boost decentralized electricity and heat generation.
"This is the way to make Ukraine stronger. This is the way to support Ukraine in regaining its freedom," Jorgensen said.
As previously reported, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced that Ukraine and its partners will hold a meeting of the Energy Coordination Group in March.
