Ukraine starts physical import of gas from Hungary

On Tuesday, February 1, Ukraine started physical imports of gas from Hungary for the first time, Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) CEO Sergiy Makogon wrote on Facebook.

"Today, Ukraine has begun physical import of gas from Hungary for the first time ever. Prior to his, the GTS system had operated only in the direction from Ukraine to Hungary. Due to the implemented technical measures, it became possible to transport gas in both directions," Makogon wrote.

He noted that the Hungarian route became the second guaranteed gas supply route to Ukraine after Slovakia, including in case of the absence of transit.

According to Makogon, the opening of this direction will also create new opportunities for traders to organize liquefied natural gas supplies to Ukraine from an LNG terminal in Croatia.

As previously reported, Gas TSO of Ukraine and the Hungarian operator FGSZ agreed to extend the guaranteed capacity for natural gas transportation from Hungary to Ukraine until September 30, 2022. The agreement between GTSOU and FGSZ allows Ukraine to physically import up to 8 million cubic meters of natural gas per day (2.9 billion cubic meters per year). Together with the available 27 million cubic meters of daily capacity from Slovakia, this will increase total guaranteed capacities for gas imports to Ukraine to 35 million cubic meters per day.
