Number of unemployed rises by 45% in Kyiv city

The number of unemployed has increased by 45% in Kyiv city since the introduction of quarantine measures on March 12, according to Director of Kyiv City Employment Center Viktor Bilych.

“The situation on the capital’s labor market has really changed. Unemployment is growing. In particular, this concerns the work of former employees of small and medium-sized businesses and large enterprises. As compared with data as of January - mid-April 2019, the number of unemployed, who applied for help and status to the Kyiv City Employment Center, increased by 45%,” Bilych said at an online briefing on April 15.

According to him, from March 12, 4,600 new unemployed have registered with the Kyiv City Employment Center.

“In the pre-quarantine period, from January 1 to March 12, 2020, as compared to the relevant period of 2019, the growth of officially registered unemployed was only 8%, and in the period from March 12 to April 13 inclusive, the growth was 2.3 times. In this short period, 4,600 people were registered over one month in 2020, while only 2,000 were registered as official unemployed in the city of Kyiv in 2019,” he stressed.

The total number of unemployed registered with the employment service made up over 13,500 as of April 15

"This is 60% higher than in the relevant period in 2019," he added.
