Ukrainian, Russian energy ministers discuss gas transit in Vienna

Ukrainian Energy and Environmental Protection Minister Oleksiy Orzhel met with Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak in Vienna on November 28, Ukraine's Energy and Environmental Protection Ministry has reported.

The meeting took place as part of preparations for the signing of an agreement on gas transportation by the Ukrainian gas transit system, the report said.

"The parties discussed the possibility of signing a contract in accordance with European rules and agreed to intensify the work. Negotiations will continue in the bilateral format and in the trilateral format with the European side," the report reads.

It notes that signing a long-term contract for gas transportation in accordance with European legislation and on economically justified terms is an issue of energy security not only for Ukraine but also for Europe.

"We, as a reliable partner, must ensure stable and uninterrupted natural gas transportation to European markets," the ministry said.
