Russian strike spotter targeting Kyiv defense facilities arrested

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has detained a Russian agent who, under the guise of fulfilling defense contracts, was directing strikes on Kyiv.

According to Ukrinform, the SSU reported this on Wednesday.

The spotter turned out to be a 59-year-old businessman recruited by Russia’s FSB, who was producing armored glass for vehicles used by Ukraine’s Defense Forces.

According to SSU cyber specialists, he was preparing a series of Russian air strikes on domestic companies that repair military vehicles and upgrade their tactical and technical capabilities.

To identify the locations of such facilities, the suspect traveled to their addresses under the pretense of negotiating contracts for the production of armored glass and coordinating technical specifications for the orders.

In reality, while on the premises of defense companies, he marked the geolocations of the facilities, including production workshops, on Google Maps.

The suspect was also planning to purchase and covertly install mini-cameras with remote access capabilities at the sites of potential targets for Russian intelligence services.

Using the disguised video devices, the Russians hoped to monitor the aftermath of the planned attacks on Ukrainian facilities.

SSU officers exposed the agent in advance, documented his contacts with the FSB, and detained him at his place of residence.

At the same time, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the defense companies involved.

The investigation established that the suspect first drew the attention of Russian operatives after posting pro-Kremlin comments in Telegram channel chats.

During searches, law enforcement seized a smartphone and computer equipment containing evidence of cooperation with the enemy. Contracts with enterprises that the suspect had attempted to target for Russian strikes were also found.

Based on the collected evidence, SSU investigators formally charged the agent under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).

The suspect is being held in custody without the right to post bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, in Zaporizhzhia, the Security Service of Ukraine detained and charged another Russian agent who had attempted to obtain employment at a company within Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex.
