Russian airstrike spotter on energy targets jailed for 15 years

A court has sentenced an agent of Russian military intelligence who helped guide enemy airstrikes on energy infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).

The convicted man is a 28-year-old graduate of an electrical engineering college in Zaporizhzhia. The SSU exposed him for adjusting enemy strikes in August 2025.

Investigators established that the suspect came to the attention of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) after posting pro-Kremlin content in Telegram channel chats. The GRU instructed him to get a job at a leading power generation company in Zaporizhzhia.

Under the guise of business trips, the man traveled around the city documenting the consequences of Russian army strikes on electrical substations and other energy facilities. He also reported on the stages of restoration of damaged energy infrastructure.

To collect similar information, the agent periodically traveled to Dnipro as well.

To communicate with the Russian special service, the suspect used an anonymous chat in a messaging app, where he sent geolocation data of energy-generating infrastructure.

SSU counterintelligence officers step by step documented the suspect’s criminal activities and carried out measures to protect potential targets.

At the final stage of the special operation, the accomplice of the enemy was detained at his place of residence. During a search, law enforcement officers seized a smartphone that he had used to communicate with his handler.

The court found the detainee guilty under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — high treason committed under martial law.
