Zelensky says Russia violated ceasefire with over 140 strikes and 10 assaults
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that as of 7:00 on Friday, May 8, more than 140 strikes on frontline positions and 10 assault operations had been recorded. Russian forces also carried out more than 850 drone strikes using various types of UAVs.
According to Ukrinform, the Ukrainian President reported this on Telegram.
“Over the course of last night, the Russian army continued to strike Ukrainian positions. As of 7 a.m., more than 140 strikes on frontline positions had been recorded,” the statement said.
Russian forces carried out 10 assault operations overnight, with the highest activity in the Sloviansk sector. They also launched more than 850 drone strikes, including FPV drones, Lancet loitering munitions, and other types. Strike drones were also used, while reconnaissance drones continued operating over frontline communities.
“All of this clearly shows that, on the Russian side, there was not even a token attempt to cease fire on the front. As we did over the past 24 hours, Ukraine will respond in kind today as well. We will defend our positions and people’s lives. Russia must end its war, and everyone will truly see it when movement toward peace begins,” Zelensky said.
As previously reported, on April 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump that Russia was ready to declare a ceasefire on May 9.
Zelensky later stated that Ukraine had not received any official signals from Russia regarding a cessation of hostilities, despite public statements on social media. Despite this, Kyiv announced a ceasefire regime beginning May 6 and called on Moscow to move from rhetoric to real action.
