Zelensky: Multiple versions under investigation in Kyiv shooting

Investigators are considering several versions as they work to establish all details about the gunman who killed six people and injured 14 in Kyiv on April 18.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this in his evening video address, Ukrinform reports.

"Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are now examining all the circumstances of the attack in Kyiv against ordinary civilians. The attacker was eliminated. He took hostages and, tragically, killed one of them. He shot dead four more people right on the street, and one more woman passed away in a hospital due to sustained injuries," Zelensky said.

He added that four hostages were rescued. As of now, 14 people are known to have been injured, though the number may rise as more seek medical assistance. Among the wounded is a 12-year-old boy.

The attacker set fire to his apartment before going out into the street with a weapon. According to the president, he had previously faced criminal charges, had lived for a long time in the Donetsk region, and was born in Russia.

"All available information about him and the motives behind his actions is being thoroughly investigated. Every detail must be verified. Investigators are working on several versions of what may have happened. All his electronic devices, his phone, and all his contacts will be examined. The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the Prosecutor General of Ukraine will inform the public. All verified information must be communicated to our people," Zelensky said.

The president also thanked everyone who responded at the scene, helped rescue victims, assisted the injured, and supported law enforcement.

"I also thank all our friends around the world who are expressing their condolences. It is an absolutely, absolutely horrifying thing – to lose people like this on an ordinary day in an ordinary city. Eternal memory to those who were killed," he said.
