GRU General Alekseyev survives assassination attempt, suspects detained in Dubai – media

Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, Deputy Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, who was the target of an assassination attempt yesterday, has survived. Two suspects have been detained.

This was reported by The Moscow Times, Ukrinform reports.

Russian media outlet Kommersant, citing sources, reported that the 64-year-old Alekseyev successfully underwent surgery following the attack and is currently in an induced coma. According to the publication, two suspects have been detained as part of the investigation and are expected to be brought in for questioning in the near future.

Media reports say the suspects were detained in Dubai.

The assassination attempt took place on February 6 in a residential building on Volokolamskoye Highway in Moscow. A representative of Russia’s Investigative Committee, Svetlana Petrenko, said that the assailant fired several shots at the general before fleeing the scene. Alekseyev was hospitalized, and the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under articles related to attempted murder and illegal trafficking of weapons.

Vladimir Alekseyev has served as First Deputy Chief of the GRU since 2011. He holds the title of Hero of Russia and is known for commanding military intelligence operations in Syria.

The general has been under U.S. sanctions since 2016 and was added to the European Union’s sanctions list in 2019.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, an unknown assailant carried out an assassination attempt on Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev in Moscow. The attacker fired several shots at the general and fled. Alekseyev was wounded and hospitalized as a result of the shooting.
