Occupiers in Mariupol illuminate drama theater where they killed 600 people with colors of Russian flag
Occupiers in Mariupol, temporarily controlled by the Russian army, are lighting up the drama theater, which they bombed in 2022, killing around 600 civilians, in the colors of the Russian flag.
According to Ukrinform, the City Council of Ukrainian Mariupol reported this on Telegram.
“The occupiers are symbolically trying to Russify the captured Ukrainian city. Now, in the evening, the so-called ‘restored drama theater’ is illuminated with the colors of the Russian flag,” the city council wrote and posted a corresponding video from the city.
The city council officials recalled that at the end of December, the occupiers officially opened the so-called “restored drama theater” in Mariupol. At the site of one of the greatest tragedies, the invaders staged a concert with singing and dancing. However, no performances are currently being held in the building. The occupying “administration” has not commented on the reasons for this decision.
“Behind this ‘festive screen’ cynically hide the atrocities of the Russian occupiers, who dropped aerial bombs on the theater on March 16, 2022. At that time, hundreds of peaceful Mariupol residents were hiding there, including many children. Many of them did not survive...,” the city council said.
As reported, in December 2025, Russian occupiers officially opened the so-called “restored” drama theater in Mariupol, which they rebuilt on the ruins of the theater they bombed, where about 600 people died.
