Journalists identify names of over 152,000 Russian soldiers killed in war against Ukraine

Journalists have identified the names of 152,142 Russian soldiers who have died since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

According to Ukrinform, this is stated in a joint report by the Russian BBC and Mediazona, prepared on the basis of open data.

The report states that 67% of the Russian military personnel who died went to war from rural areas and small towns with a population of less than 100,000, although according to statistics, less than half of the country's population lives in these settlements.

In large Russian cities, the level of losses was the lowest, if we take into account not the absolute figures, but the proportion of the male population.

Of the 90,626 Russian soldiers killed, whose place of residence or burial was discovered by journalists, 33% lived in large cities and megacities, 27% in cities with a population of 10,000 to 99,000, and another 40% in rural areas and urban-type settlements.

Moscow had the lowest casualty rate in Russia: only 5 people per 10,000 men. In less economically prosperous regions, particularly in Buriatia and Tyva, these figures are 27 and 33 times higher, respectively.

As of November 28, 2025, the maximum number of military casualties from the region was reported by officials and media outlets in the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan, namely 7,643 people.

According to journalists, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 48,616 Russian volunteers, 26,960 contract soldiers, 19,131 prisoners, 16,013 mobilized soldiers, and 2,824 private military companies (PMCs) participants have been killed. The affiliation of another 38,598 dead to any of the above categories could not be established.

Among the contract soldiers, 14,549 of the dead were motorized riflemen, 4,144 were paratroopers, 2,218 were marines and Russian Navy personnel, 1,613 were tankers, 1,007 were special forces, 988 were artillerymen, and 600 were Russian National Guard members. Another 1,841 dead belonged to other units of the Russian army.

Journalists noted that the actual number of Russian casualties in the war could be between 234,000 and 338,100 people.

As reported by Ukrinform, the total combat losses of Russian troops since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, from February 24, 2022, to November 28, 2025, amount to about 1,170,790 people, including 1,100 people in the previous day, according to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
