Russian President Vladimir Putin is interested in establishing of the so-called "truce" in Donbas, which may last up to December's decision of the EU to extend the sanctions.

Ex-Foreign Minister of Sweden Carl Bildt said this in an interview with the Yevropeiska Pravda (European Truth) Ukrainian news website.

"Putin will attend the UN General Assembly [his visit starts on September 28], where he has not been present long since. He really needs to create a more attractive picture for this visit. It is possible that he will need real observance of the 'truce' till EU decides on the sanctions in December," Bildt said.

He noted that the relative ceasefire in Donbas was a good sign.

"This proves that if Russia wants to stop the armed confrontation [in Donbas], it will be able to do that," the politician stressed.

According to Bildt, we should not forget that they [Russian-backed militants] are not simply capable of launching serious offensive now.
