The organizers of the 2026 Water Polo World Cup, to be held in Malta, have awarded a technical defeat to the Ukrainian national team for refusing to play a match against the “neutral” Russian team.
According to Suspilne Sport, this is stated on the official website of the World Aquatics Men’s Water Polo World Cup 2026, where the match report records Ukraine’s 0-5 loss, as reported by Ukrinform.
The teams were scheduled to face off in the match for seventh place in the second division of the World Cup. Ukraine refused to take the field against the water polo players of the aggressor country, having previously played five games in the group stage and at the start of the playoffs.
World Aquatics has not yet announced any further sanctions against the Ukrainian national team, aside from the technical defeat in the seventh-place match.
