Ukrainian tennis star Lesia Tsurenko, 33, decided not to play against the world’s second-ranked Arina Sabalenka of Belarus at a WTA’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells (USA) with an $8.8 million prize fund.
The organizers announced the decision made by the Ukrainian athlete just a few minutes before the match was scheduled to start, Ukrinform reports, referring to BTU.
The Ukrainian retired “for personal reasons,” the tournament’s management reported.
As reported, Tsurenko started at qualifying, where she won four matches, making it to the third round in Indian Wells for the first time since 2019.
