The most prestigious organization in professional boxing -- the World Boxing Council (WBC) -- has opened its representative office in Kyiv, according to Ukrinform.

Ukraine is one of the countries with the oldest boxing traditions and history, which are closely connected with the WBC. In 2004, an extraordinary meeting of the WBC Board was held in Ukraine. Vitali Klitschko has been the dominant WBC champion for many years, and in 2018, on his initiative, one of the most spectacular annual WBC conventions was held in Kyiv.

"Ukraine is a land of great world champions and legendary figures in our sport. It continues to be one of the inexhaustible hotbeds of talent, both at an Olympic and professional level," said WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.

"Currently, boxers from all over the world choose Ukraine for big cards. It is becoming a major boxing center in the Eastern European region. A relevant and salient aspect to highlight is the work that is currently being done in Ukraine to train, guide and prepare amateur boxers in their transition to professional boxing," he said.

The WBC is convinced that the opening of its office in Ukraine will promote the flourishing development of professional and amateur boxing in the region, this being the main objective. Social responsibility activities will also play an important role in WBC Ukraine's work plan, under the guidelines of the WBC Cares program. Another activity of paramount importance for this talented team will be the opening of boxing schools and gyms for homeless children and children from needy families, who will be able to practice sports for free and, under such conditions, will be motivated to succeed in life. Developing children's minds as champions is so very important.

"The WBC is an innovative, pioneering organization that always works with the health and well-being of athletes in mind. For us, it's priority number one mindset. We will, of course, implement nutrition, hydration, weight management programs, Clean Boxing Program, and will promote support for retired boxers, through the Jose Sulaiman Fund," Sulaiman said.

The WBC Ukraine team will be led by Mykola Kovalchuk, a prominent lawyer in the field of sports law, who has a recognized and distinguished public record of achievement.
