Ukraine's top seeded tennis player Elina Svitolina has pulled out of the season's first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, which is taking place in Melbourne ($44.5 million in prize money).

No.6 seed Svitolina lost to No.4 seed Naomi Osaka from Japan 4-6, 1-6, Ukrinform reports.

The match lasted one hour and ten minutes.

Osaka will compete for a place in the final with the winner of a tie between American Serena Williams and Czech Karolina Pliskova. Another semifinal opponents are Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and Danielle Rose Collins from the United States.

Svitolina lost a second straight quarterfinal in Melbourne.

The Australian Open will last until January 27.
