In Lviv, monuments in UNESCO-protected area damaged due to shelling
This was reported on Telegram by the Head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, Maksym Kozytskyi, according to Ukrinform.
“Experts from the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, together with colleagues from the Office of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Lviv City Council, are currently recording the consequences of the attack on architectural heritage sites. The next step is a commission inspection and the preparation of a technical condition report,” the statement said.
As noted by the head of the Lviv region, the Russian UAV struck the historic area of Lviv, within the buffer zone of monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Ensemble of the Historic Centre of the City of Lviv and the Ensemble of St. George's Cathedral. As a result of the strike, architectural monuments of local importance were damaged, including the Church of St. Olga and St. Elizabeth, dating from the early 20th century, and the building of the S. Konarskyi School, built in 1892–1893 (School No. 55). In particular, stained glass windows by Valerii Shalenko in the church and window fillings in the school building were damaged.
He also added that in July 2023, UNESCO provided enhanced protection to cultural heritage sites in Ukraine, including the Ensemble of the Historic Centre of the City of Lviv.
As reported by Ukrinform, a Russian drone crashed on a playground near the Bandera monument in Lviv.
