Iran reports nearly 2,000 deaths during protests — Reuters
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters, citing an Iranian official.
“About 2,000 people, including security personnel, have been killed in protests in Iran,” an Iranian official said today.
This is the first time the country's authorities have acknowledged the high number of deaths resulting from intense repression after two weeks of nationwide protests.
The official, whose name has not been disclosed, did not provide further details about the victims. However, he stated that “terrorists” were to blame for the deaths of protesters and Iranian security forces.
The protests, triggered by difficult economic conditions, have been the most significant domestic challenge for the Iranian regime in at least three years and have come amid increased international pressure following strikes by Israeli and US forces last year.
On Monday evening, US President Donald Trump announced 25% import tariffs on products from any country that does business with Iran, a major oil exporter. Trump also said that among the options he is considering to “punish” Iran for its repression is military action.
As reported by Ukrinform, US President Donald Trump said that his administration is seriously considering possible options for the US response to events in Iran and the regime's killings and mass arrests of protesters, including the use of force.
