On December 12, Ukraine marks Ground Forces Day. Established by a presidential decree on October 18, 1997, the holiday honors the contributions of the Ground Forces – the largest branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – in ensuring the country’s defense capabilities.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized on the occasion that the Ground Forces hold the frontline of Ukraine’s defense. He shared his remarks on Facebook, as reported by Ukrinform.

"The Ground Forces are a power that unites mechanized and tank units, artillery and missiles, army aviation and air defense, unmanned and robotic systems, special forces, and support units. Today, this is a modern army that has stood firm and continues to fight for Ukraine," Syrskyi said.

He noted that at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, ground units became the first shield against the aggressor’s army.

"Ukrainian infantry defended Kyiv, drove back the invaders in the Slobozhanshchyna offensive, liberated the right-bank Kherson region, destroyed Wagner forces in Bakhmut, and fought the enemy in Kursk region. Ground Forces hold the frontline of Ukraine’s defense. Fortifications are important, but they mean nothing without Ukrainian infantry inside them," Syrskyi stressed.

He also highlighted that the Ground Forces are undergoing an unprecedented transformation directly on the battlefield.

"Unmanned aerial systems, ground drones, combat modules, modern electronic warfare tools, mobile assault groups – this is the new daily reality of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. I am proud to have had the honor of commanding the Ground Forces and today to lead the strongest ground army in Europe," Syrskyi said.

He added that the day honors every comrade-in-arms and every sister-in-arms – Ground Forces soldiers who have laid down their lives for Ukraine’s freedom and independence in the fight against Russian invaders. Eternal memory and glory to the heroes.

"I thank every soldier of the Ground Forces for serving the Ukrainian people, for your resilience and faith in our Victory, and for holding our land," Syrskyi concluded.
