Agricultural crops in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro regions are under threat of destruction because these regions have been using water from the Kakhovka Reservoir for irrigation due to annual droughts.

Chairman of the parliamentary committee on agrarian and land policy, Oleksandr Haidu, emphasized this, Ukrinform reports citing the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

"The explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant (HPP) is a terrorist act that threatens global food security. The consequences are already significant for our farmers. It is now impossible to irrigate the land in the three regions that depend on the Kakhovka HPP. These regions supply our food to the world. The explosion of the HPP by Russians is not only an act of ecocide that affects the ecosystem of the entire Black Sea region, but also another attempt by the aggressor to provoke famine in the world," the MP said.

He reminded that Ukraine fulfills its obligations as a guarantor of global food security by supplying food to those countries that need it. However, Russia is constantly creating new "threats to increase hunger in the world".

"Today's tragedy has catastrophic consequences for the entire civilized world. No country should stand aside. The world must take decisive action to stop and condemn Russia's actions and prevent a famine," Haidu added.

As reported, Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka HPP on June 6. As a result of the explosion of the engine room from the inside, the station was completely destroyed. Due to the explosion of the reservoir, there is a risk of flooding energy facilities in Kherson region, including the Kherson combined heat and power (CHP) plant. Evacuation of the population from potential flood areas has begun.
