Over 2M Ukrainians evacuated from warzone by rail - operator

JSC Ukrzaliznytsia over the 15 days of war has ensured safe evacuation of more than 2 million people fleeing hostilities.

This was reported by the company's press service on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.

Of this number, 226,000 took a train abroad, the statement added.

It is noted that most passengers were evacuated from Kyiv and Kharkiv, the cities most threatened by the invading forces. The most popular international railway route is the one to Poland.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on March 4, Ukrzaliznytsia closed ticket sales on all westbound domestic train routes, operating them in evacuation mode.

On February 24, Russian President Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine. Russian troops have been shelling and destroying key infrastructure, massively shelling and bombing residential areas.

Martial law was imposed in Ukraine and general mobilization was announced.
